Fear & Anxiety

In todays world, anxiety & associated health issues have become much more common. And for many different reasons. One reason is that our world has become much more accessable and interconnected. We can access news and information immediately via the internet and live stream it to our computers or smartphones. Or we are watching news on the TV. With current world events such as the coronavirus (COVID19) now having become a global pandemic, it has invoked fear and anxiety in many people. This is a serious threat to our health and wellbeing and we need to keep up to date with health advisory authorities.

However, news headlines can often be sensationlist and negative therefore creating anxiety and worry for many people. This then becomes repetitive on a daily and even hourly basis. It’s great that we have this technology, and that the entire world is vitually at our fingertips. The way in which the media present some of this information however, may not always be as it seems. Nor is it helpful to those who may be prone to, or suffering from anxiety and associated health conditions.

What are you focussing on?

We spend more time using smartphones and ipads as the technology continues to evolve at an ever increasing pace. So here’s a question – what are you spending most of your time focussing on? If the information that you are absorbing is mostly negative and sensationalist, then are you aware of how your body reacts to it? Could it be creating anxiety and affecting your physical & mental health? Negative stress & anxiety is mediated through your sympathetic nervous system (your fight or flight reponse).

This part of your nervous system is there to keep you safe and it will respond to an actual or perceived threat. So for example, if someone jumped out from behind a tree with a gun and said “give me all your money” what happens? Your heart beats faster and your blood is pushed to the extremeties. Your throat feels dry and you come out in a cold sweat. You are preparing to fight or run for your life.This is your ‘fight or flight’ reponse working to protect you from a real threat.

What happens then if you have an imagined fearful thought? Because your subconscious mind does not know the difference between a real or imagined threat, you experience the same physiological response. It is the degree and intensity of the fear that will determine how your physical response will play out. If you experience fear based thoughts a lot, a general anxiety maybe the resulting condition. This can begin to affect your physiological health and your immune system which is not what you need right now.

Helpful Tips

Taking care of your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health has never been more important. Ensuring that you get enough physical exercise and plenty of quality sleep for starters. Choosing wisely with foods and maintaining a healthy diet. Engaging in positive activities that enrich your mind and spirit which might include – self hypnosis, meditation and guided imagery. Maybe get out in nature more or do something that you know brings you joy. Remember that you have an abundance of inner resources! You are more than equal to any situation, event or circumstance that could arise in your life.
