Frequently Asked
Questions...
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a completely natural state of consciousness, which you enter many
times during the day. This occurs when you are concentrating on something of great interest e.g. watching a great
movie, or perhaps playing an interesting game on the computer. Examples of other forms of naturally
occurring hypnosis can be daydreaming and driving long distances over familiar roads.
The word "Hypnosis" was derived from the Greek word 'Hypnos' - meaning Sleep.
Hypnosis is in fact not sleep, but rather - it resembles sleep. It is an altered state of consciousness
or level of awareness whereby the conscious or critical mind becomes passive, and the subconscious
creative mind becomes more dominant. Ancient scripts and documents verify that the use of Hypnosis for healing and
behavioural change, is one of the oldest forms of therapy.
What is Hypnotherapy?
'Hypnotherapy' simply means - the therapy given whilst a person is experiencing
the state of Hypnosis. The hypnotherapist (with the client's consent) induces the state of hypnosis and then
proceeds to apply hypnotherapeutic techniques which are appropriate to the individual's agreed goals, needs
and desired outcomes. The techniques used vary depending upon the individual requirements and will be
discussed at the time of your first consultation.
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Yes, however with a
couple of exceptions. Very young
children may have some difficulty and people who have suffered
severe brain damage. In the context of 'Hypnotherapy' being hypnotised is a consent state. A person may not be
hypnotised against their will.
How many appointments will I need?
Hypnotherapy is Short Term therapy with lasting results. The number of appointments
that are required for your specific need will be determined by your Hypnotherapist. Each individual case
will be evaluated and agreed upon at the time of your first appointment. Some treatment programs are packaged such
as Smoking Cessation which is a 3 session program.
Can hypnosis help with general health and
wellbeing?
Yes, many people benefit both physically and psychologically after experiencing hypnotic
relaxation and have reported results such as speedy recovery after surgical procedures or illness, and a
general positive feeling of wellbeing. Hypnosis is not a cure, however it is a powerful tool which can
assist in the healing process and is a valuable complimentary adjunct in the promotion of general health
and wellbeing.
What will I
experience?
Whilst receiving Hypnotherapy, client's generally experience a deep relaxation, and a
general dulling of the peripheral sensories. You may experience pleasant feelings of numbness and detachment,
tingling sensations, peaceful feelings and general body warmth. You will be aware of everything that is being said
to you and people are often surprised to discover that there is no loss of consciousness or control.
