There have been many books written by many well known authors about the power of belief and the placebo effect. It has been said that whatever you believe is true for you – whether it be negative or positive – if you believe it then your thought processes and behaviour will be influenced by that belief. The sub conscious mind acts like a powerful computer – albeit a very complex computer, but a computer all the same. For instance, if you believe that you can’t do a particular thing – then the harder you try to do it, the less able you are able to do it.
This is because the subconscious mind is supporting you fully in your belief! The power of the ‘The placebo effect’ is a well known phenomenon and is used alongside almost all clinical trials of new drugs by the pharmaceutical companies. Once again the power of our beliefs can affect our physiology in a positive or negative way. The outcome for someone suffering from a life threatening disease can be influenced by their belief and the meaning that that attach to the disease and/or treatment. Is it the drugs that heal the body? Or do the drugs assist and influence the healing process? I believe that it is the latter and that their is a certain amount of placebo effect attached to many drugs, because we in the western world have become a drug dependent society. This being said, it is not my intention to knock the pharmaceutical companies or medical profession as I believe that their work has it’s place.
